Snowy weather made for so-so performance
To be honest, I was really surprised the performance wasn't postponed/canceled. The performing arts center was less than half full so we were able to move and had excellent seats (though our original ones may have been just as good). Apparently the orchestra couldn't make it because of the snow, so they played recorded music from a CD.
As for the ballet itself, this is the first one I've been to since I was a child, so I'm not sure what I expected. Somehow it just didn't seem as polished and "professional" as I thought it would be. The first act seemed more like a pantomimed play than a ballet--the dancing was really minimal. The first time I felt like I was seeing ballet of the caliber I expected was when the Jester appeared--loved him! Later sequences that were obviously supposed to be synchronized just weren't--there always seemed to be one or two people that were off on their timing (especially the fairies). I have to wonder if some of these people were filling in for others that couldn't make it to the theater. The prince, while a fine dancer, was shorter than just about everyone on stage (except Cinderella) and left me feeling underwhelmed (yes, I realize this is stereotyping, but he didn't have the presence of a Prince).
This ballet is obviously geared toward families, and my 8 year old son loved it. The ugly step-sisters were hilarious and stole just about every scene they were in. The ballet toward the end of the third act was better than other parts (when just Cinderella & Prince dancing), but that's where my son started to lose interest and asked when it would be over.
Overall an average performance but a great experience for my son.
